Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 16, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 16, 2007,
Today Norm Norlander, Danny Cline, Chuck Furimsky and I fished this last day of the current Sailfish School aboard "Spindrift" with Captain Chris Sheeder along with mates Nestor and Ricardo. Chuck was the first to catch a sailfish on fly today at 10:05 Am, and then we went another 2 hours without getting a fish to tease in. The bite turned on at about 1:30 and then got pretty hot, at 3:45 we headed back to the dock with the final score for the day, Chuck 2 sailfish from 3 bites, Norm 2 sailfish from 3 bites, Danny Cline caught both of his bites, and I landed 3 sailfish from 3 casts. These anglers had a good time, we released 23 sailfish during this three day school. They have already scheduled the next trip to The Casa Vieja Lodge for more great sail fishing on fly.
I will head home to North Carolina soon, however I feel that I need to report that the Sailfish are back big time in Guatemala. My students and I, while fishing aboard a Casa Vieja Lodge Vessel , caught 75 sailfish and two Blue Marlin on fly during our ten days of fly fishing.
On my day off Jim Turner and I went out and caught 4 Marlin on live bait, several of the Guatemalan fleet of fine sport boats caught 3, 4, 5, and one boat even caught 6 Blue Marlin on live bait while I was here. Yesterday day 3 of the fleet fishing with bait caught over 40 Sailfish with one catching over 50 in one day. There is still a few available dates during prime time, if you think that you can handle this quality of fishing give me a call or contact Casa Vieja Lodge directly. More Reports to follow!
Merry Christmas:

Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 14 & 15, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 14 2007,
Today at the last Sailfish School of 2007 I was joined by Chuck Furimsky (Owner of "The Fly Fishing Shows") Norm Norlander from Washington, and my good friend Danny Cline from West Virginia. We are fishing aboard the Casa Vieja Lodge vessel "Spindrift" with Captain Chris Sheeder along with mates Ricardo and Nestor for this Sailfish School.
We left marina Pez Veila at 7:00 AM and at 7:45 Danny Cline had released his first sailfish on fly, I was next, then Chuck had released his first all by 9:30 AM. At days end each student had caught a sailfish and we had caught 8 from 10 bites. As usual the crew did a great job and my students had a good catch percentage.
We were back at the lodge by 5:30 PM swimming in the pool and shortly after enjoyed a great meal at Casa Vieja Lodge. "Great Fly Fishing"
December 15, 2007:
Today we ran an hour and a half off shore to try a different spot and look for a Blue Marlin, we did find a big school of spinner dolphin on football size Yellow Fin Tuna but did not find a Blue. Norm caught 3 out of 4 bites today his first ever, while Chuck and Danny each caught 2 sailfish on fly. Another great day at the office. More Reports to follow, I love this JOB!!

Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 13, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 13, 2007,
Day three of this Sailfish School out of the Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala, Michael Bates, Jim and Helen Truchen, and I boarded Intensity at seven AM and then Captain Mike Sheeder headed out to Sailfish World. At 7:28 Flaco and Monolo put the teasers in the water and we had each released a Sailfish by 9:00 Am. The seas were relatively calm and the sky blue with bright sunshine, lots of Sailfish around today.
My friend Bill Marts from the Fly Shop in Redding, CA, went out with Captain Chris Sheeder aboard the Casa Vieja Lodge vessel Spindrift, to take some pictures and to catch a sailfish on fly. By 11 AM Bill had caught and released five on the fly then they took off all of the hooks. The rest of the day they cast flies with no hooks to Sailfish to photograph the bite.
Mean while aboard the Intensity my crew raised 35 sailfish got a total of 15 to bite the fly, and we released 7. During this 3 day Sailfish School between my 3 students along with Bill Marts we caught and released 23 Sailfish and a Blue Marlin on Fly. We all had a great time and my students will be back to the wonderful Casa Vieja Lodge for more of this world class fly fishing.
My next Sailfish School starts tomorrow with Danny Cline, Norm Norlander, and Chuck Furimsky as my students. They arrived today and are ready for action. My friend Nick Smith aboard Old Reliable caught 17 Sailfish on Fly today, as usual a great job for Nick, Chip, and crew. Also my friend Scott Lund, fishing aboard Decisive with Captain Brad Philips caught 6 Blue Marlin yesterday. Nat Harris caught a Blue Marlin on fly one day, and then on the next day Nick Smith caught a Blue on Fly, The very next day I caught another Blue Marlin on fly, this may just be the new Blue Marlin fly fishing Mecca of the Pacific! As that country song goes: "I Love My Job"! More reports to follow.

Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 11, & 12, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 11, 2007,
Today is the first day of a new three day Sailfish School out of the Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala. This Sailfish School will be held aboard the Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco, Manolo, and Nestor as professors. Students for this class are Helen and Jim Truchan from Michigan, Michael Bates from St. Petersburg, FL, along with special guest Bill Marts from "The Fly Shop" in Redding CA.
After some instruction last night and on the way out this morning, Helen was the first to cast the fly to a sailfish, hook it, and release her first Sailfish on fly.
I, soon after hooked a blue Marlin (Big) on fly which broke me off on the jump, then Jim, caught the next Sail. Fishing was slow in the morning, (By Guatemalan standards), however it picked up in the afternoon with Michael, Helen, and Jim all Releasing 2 sailfish each on fly while I caught one of a double header. We wound up catching seven sailfish on fly from a total of 9 bites, a good start. By the way my friend Nick Smith caught a Blue Marlin on fly today aboard his beautiful vessel Old Reliable.
December 12, 2007;
Today Michael Bates was the hot rod releasing 3 sailfish on fly, while BII Marts from "The Fly Shop", caught his first Guatemalan sailfish on fly.
We only raised 21 sailfish today the great crew teased in and got seven to bite and we released 5 of these wonderful fish.
Oh, and by the way, in the morning we raised a Blue Marlin (close to 200 pounds), I cast to it, and got a slow motion bite, the rest is history, I released my first Guatemalan Blue on fly. Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco and Nestor did a great job. I will stop smiling someday, I love this job! more reports to follow from the best Blue Marlin and Sailfish location in the world, Guatemala.

Guatemala fishing Report
December, 10, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 10, 2007,
Today Nat Harris fly fished alone as a solo angler aboard the Casa Vieja Lodge vessel Spindrift with captain Chris Sheeder along with mates Ricardo and Nester. Nat hooked and released 7 Sailfish on fly which is a good day for any angler, however, the highlight of his day was that he hooked fought, and landed an estimated 350 pound Blue Marlin on fly.
According to Chris and the crew, Nat did a great job, showing patients as he backed off of the drag and allowed this monster fish to rip off 250 yards of backing before applying just enough pressure on the 20 pound tippet to bring the marlin to the boat so the mate could grab the bill. Congratulations to Chris, Ricardo, Nestor, and Nat for a job well done.
Mean while I went fishing with Jim Turner aboard the vessel Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder and Mates Flaco and Manolo. Today our goal was to catch 6 Marlin in one day, it started pretty good with 3 Blue Marlin a 35 pound Dorado, and a 400 pound shark all released before noon. We raised a total of 7 Marlin, of which we missed the hookup on two, then Jim hooked and landed a 300 pound plus Black Marlin which I got a great picture of. Not a bad day of fishing in Guatemala today, who would have dreamed that we could plan to catch half a dozen Marlin in the country known for the best Sail fishing in the world. If your goal is to catch a Blue Marlin, maybe you should book a rip to Guatemala, the new Marlin Capitol of Central America. More Sailfish School reports from Casa Vieja Lodge to follow.

Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 9, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 9, 2007,
Nat Harris fished aboard Casa Vieja Lodge vessel Spindrift with captain Chris Sheeder along with mates Ricardo and nester today. I came along to observe Nat demonstrate his newly learned skills and to take some pictures. We left the Sailfish Marina at 7:15 AM in search of Sailfish or Marlin on fly. Chris ran east for about 20 miles to a spot where another boat caught some Blue Marlin yesterday.
We began fishing at 8:10 AM and by 9:00 Nat had released 3 red hot sailfish and I got some cool pictures. we picked away at them until about noon, when we came upon several giant schools of Bonita which were on the surface being chased by Blue Marlin and Sailfish. We spent the next two hours trying everything we new how to do to tease a Blue Marlin in close enough to get the fly to it.
We watched three or four boats around us using live bait to all catch three or more marlin while we tried to get one on fly. Finally we put out several live Bonita as teasers and sure enough up came mister Blue Marlin (over 200 pounds). Ricardo and Nester did a great job teasing that fish up to the fly, however just as Nat made a perfect cast, that Marlin faded off never to be seen again by us.
After a couple of hours we put out the Sailfish teasers and began raising more sailfish. The mates and captain worked very hard to teas in some of these finicky Sailfish and by the end of the day Nat had caught and released seven Sailfish on fly from 9 bites, we has raised over thirty fish but they were reluctant to eat the fly today. After 3 days if fly fishing for Sailfish at my first Sailfish School of December Mr. Nat Harris had caught and released 23 Sailfish on fly, Fishing here in Guatemala is back to normal, I think it will keep getting better. Stay tuned for more fishing reports from Casa Vieja Lodge here in Guatemala.

Guatemala Sailfish School Report
December, 7 & 8, 2007
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala:
December 7, 2007,
I am back at my home away from home, Casa Vieja Lodge, in Puerto San Jose, Guatemala, where I began my 2007-2008 "Sailfish School" season today. The first three days I was hired by Mr. Nat Harris from Burlington, North Carolina, for a private tutoring Sailfish School. Nat has caught hundreds of Sailfish and Marlin on fly over the last decade, so the reason for these private lessons, was for me to coach Nat in learning to relax, while in the pursuit of Billfish on the fly. Most folks even with experience get an unbelievable rush, which makes them make mistakes causing a poor catch ratio.
Today Nat and I fished with Captain Chris Sheeder and his two mates Ricardo and Nestor, aboard the vessel Afinity, which was a replacement boat as the restoration of "Release" is not quite finished. After a 45 minute dissertation and a full day of intense coaching, Nat wound up catching 13 Sailfish on Fly from 17 bites, I cast to one fish after Nat was hooked up and we wound up catching a double header. The Sailfishing had been a little slow for Guatemala last year since February, however, They are back "BIG TIME"! We raised 42 fish, got 18 to bite the fly, and released 14 on fly on our first day.
Today Nat told me that he had learned more about the easy way to catch Billfish on Fly during his first day at the Sailfish School than at anytime during his fishing career. Today the weather changed a little and the Sailfish were a little hard to tease up to the boat. Nat wound up getting 5 bites from which he caught 3 Sailfish. We raised 16 fish however they would fade away before getting close enough to cast the fly too.
Captain Mike Sheeder aboard the Intensity another Casa Vieja Vessel had a couple from Huston who released 23 Sailfish on bait. On another note, my friend Captain Ron Hamlin caught 4 Blue Marlin today, it seems that the Marlin fishing in Guatemala has become a great fishery.
Casa Vieja Lodge and the Fins 'N Feathers fleet has a few dates still available for the 2008 season. Fishing is hot, give me a call for available dates or contact Merijo or Jennifer at: www.casaviejalodge.com . Stay tuned for more fishing reports from "The Sailfish School" at Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala.

Sailfish School Fishing Report
January 9, 2007
Greetings from The Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
January 9, 2007;
My friends Billy Coulliette and Dusty Byrd Coulliette, the owners of Troutfitters in Coopers Landing, Alaska, Joined me for our third day of fly fishing for Sailfish aboard the vessel Release out of the Sailfish Marina in Guatemala. We searched all day with Captain Chris using all of his knowledge along with the speed of "RELEASE" to find clean water or an area where the Sailfish were plentiful. At 11:05 Am we had three red hot Sailfish come up on our teasers, and tease in real good.
Dusty was up so she cast to the first fish which engulfed her fly, and began to make its run. Billy cast to the second fish which ate the fly, jumps, then headed for the bottom of the ocean. Minutes later Dusty's sailfish spit the hook and her line went slack, she reeled in her fly while the third sailfish followed it trying to eat the fly. The fish missed the fly and took off so we concentrated on getting Billy's fish up for a release. After releasing Billy's Sailfish we went on the hunt again, We never saw another Sailfish all day.
Our total score for the three days of fly fishing for sailfish had us raising 30 sailfish to the teasers, we managed to get 12 to bite the fly, we then caught and released 7 sailfish on fly. This seems like slow fishing to me for here in Guatemala, however catching 7 Sailfish on fly during 3 days of fishing, on one boat, anyplace else in the world would be great fishing. I am sure fishing will improve tomorrow, More reports to follow.
As usual the food, lodging, and service, here at The Fins 'N Feathers "Casa Vieja Lodge" is five star. Thanks to owner Jim Turner, manager Antonio Valdez, the staff, captains and mates, The Casa Vieja Lodge and The Fins 'N Feathers fleet now bring visiting anglers the wonderful experience which made Guatemala the prime sailfish location in the world during the last decade. Contact me for a few still available dates during this season.

January 8, 2007;
My friends Billy Coulliette and Dusty Byrd Coulliette, the owners of Troutfitters in Coopers Landing, Joined me for our second day of fly fishing for Sailfish aboard the vessel Release out of the Sailfish Marina in Guatemala. Captain Chris headed west from the marina and after 2 hours running we began fishing 46 miles from home. Mates Niko and Ricardo put out the teasers while we got ready.
After 45 mnutes we raised a big Sailfish which teased in hot, Dusty made a perfect cast, the fish exploded on her fly and the battle began. Fourty five minutes later Dusty wound that estimated 120 pound Sailfish up to the boat. Niko grabbed the bill and Dusty got her first Sailfish Lapdance Guatemalan style.
We looked for fish all day and never saw another fish until 20 minutes prior to quiting time. Dusty made another great cast and caught her second Sailfish of the day on fly. Today was ladies day, Billy and I never got a bite. Tomorrow we will try again, more reports to follow.

My friends Billy Coulliette and Dusty Byrd Coulliette, the owners of Troutfitters in Coopers Landing, Joined me for three days of Sailfishing aboard the Release with Captain Chris Sheeder and mates Niko and Ricardo. Today, at 7:50 AM, as I was showing Billy and Dusty what to expect, a red hot Sailfish came up in the teasers so I cast to it, and 5 minutes later we took a picture of me getting a Lap Dance frommy 1000th Billfish on fly in my lifetime. (I Love My Job!) Shortly after we raised another fish which Dusty pulled the hook on shortly after the hookup. We raised 8 Sailfish today, Billy caught two from 4 bites, Dusty had bad luck and missed all 3 of her bites while I caught 2 for two. Of the 22 fish that we raised they were finicky with only 9 teasing in for a good cast, of which we released four. Tomorrow we plan on a long ride to explore and try to find a new school of Sailfish. More reports to follow.
