Greetings from Rainy, Cold, North Carolina:
I arrived home late last night after spending another week at my favorite place, (Casa Vieja Lodge) doing my job, (Teaching anglers how to catch billfish on fly), and having fun. This has been a really good season at my Sailfish Schools, my clients and I have caught and released six marlin on fly during the last four months. This last week produced some really fun fly fishing, not only my clients but Brian and Sarah's groups , and many other guests had really great fishing, and are very happy with the new ownership of CVL.
Several days ago, the dock at Marina Pez Vela was bustling with the talk of an Albino Blue Marlin which had been caught the day before aboard the vessel Spanish Fly down in Los Suenos. Everyone was looking at the pictures on the internet, this may be the rarest Blue Marlin ever.
The day before yesterday my client John Killian, hooked a big (250#) blue marlin on fly, aboard "Makaira" with captain Jason Brice". Two hours and forty five minutes later we released that awesome fish which was caught and released while using IGFA 20 pound tippet, and a pink Cam Sigler popper fly, while using a TFO BW-HD fly rod, a Mako #9700 fly reel, and a RIO leviathan 550 grain fly line. What a great fish.
On March 2, 2002 in Port Stephens Australia, Tom Evans set the world record on a Blue Marlin of 288 pounds 12 ounces, which is still the record, the record he broke was 266 pounds set in 1991. The degree of difficulty of a catch like this is hard to explain, first lets say that John's Marlin could have been 50 pounds heavier or lighter than estimated. If the Marlin was exactly 250 pounds and was caught on 20 pound tippet, this 12 1/2 to 1 ratio, would be equal to catching a 1650 pound Blue Marlin while using 130 pound test line, the world record Pacific Blue Marlin on 130 pound test weighted 1376 pounds).
20 years ago if we ever saw a Blue Marlin over 200 pounds, while fly fishing, we would feed a bait and catch it on conventional, because most folks thought it could not be caught. Now if you are a good angler, and you are fishing with one of the top crews in Guatemala, and raise a Blue Marlin under 400 pounds, the whole crew believes that it can be caught and that we will catch it. I really love my job! I cant wait for the next Blue Marlin on Fly.
Meanwhile, Brian Horsley and Sarah Gardner and their teams fishing aboard Intensity and Rum Line yesterday, caught 17 Sailfish on fly from 33 bites. They are still out fishing today as I write this report, more reports to follow.

Sailfish School Report, Casa Vieja Lodge
March 15, 2014
Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today, aboard the vessel "Makaira" with Captain Jason Brice, mates Jeffrey and Wilson, along with anglers, John Killian and Jim Whitehurst we began the third and final day of this Sailfish School. Weather was sunny and calm with medium swell and hot weather, Jim Whitehurst caught and released two nice sailfish before 9:00 AM.
After we missed a couple more sailfish we had a dry spell, raising several sailfish which would not tease in, and then at 11:44 that all changed. John Killian, several years my senior, was up and ready to feed the fly to the next sailfish, wrong! In came a red hot Blue Marlin of about 250 pounds, we adjusted the drag on the Mako #9700 reel to 1 pound pressure, and John made a perfect cast with the TFO Blue Water Heavy Duty Fly Rod, well, that big marlin launched about 10 foot from that pink Cam Sigler fly and ate it on the way back down. five seconds later that big marlin was gray hounding away about 200 yards from the boat, the battle was on. John did a great job as did Captain Jason Brice along with his mates Wilson and Jeffrey. Two hours and forty five minutes later the leader came inside of the tip top and we released another magnificent Blue Marlin on fly aboard team Makaira.
Later in the afternoon, Jim Whitehurst released a couple more Sailfish on fly, I think that these guys had a pretty good "Sailfish School", and may try this game again, they are great guys to fish with. They may even be invited to return here to Blue Marlin world.
Meanwhile, Sarah Gardner with her group of fly anglers, while fishing aboard Rum Line with Captain Chris Sheeder today caught and released 14 sailfish on fly. Brian Horsley and his team of fly anglers released five sailfish on fly from 9 bites.
By the way, I love my job! Wish you were here, stay tuned for more fly fishing reports to follow shortly, get down here and enjoy this world class fly fishing.

Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today, aboard the vessel "Makaira" with Captain Jason Brice, mates Jeffrey and Wilson, along with anglers, John Killian and Jim Whitehurst we began the second day of this Sailfish School.. John and Jim learned a lot yesterday when they each caught three sailfish on fly and found out that when you don't make mistakes it is pretty easy to catch big Sailfish on fly.
It was overcast and windy as we headed out this morning at 7:00 AM, at 8:40 we slowed to a trolling speed, deployed the teasers, and by 10:00 AM we had caught and released several Sailfish on fly. Both anglers missed at least one attempt at catching a fish but they both are quick learners.
As the day went on the seas got pretty choppy while the wind picked up, fishing was hard due to 3 to 6 foot seas later in the day. No problem, team Makaira raised 13 sailfish, got 9 of them to bite the fly, while John and Jim caught and released 6 big sailfish on fly.
Brian Horsley's first group of fly anglers left today, the two boats fished 3 days and they caught and released 48 Sailfish on fly, what a great trip. Sarah arrived yesterday with their second group, they are fishing on the "Rum Line" and the "Intensity" , I will have some of there reports later, we are all enjoying paradise.
I love my job, wish you were here, by the way there are still a few prime dates left available here at Casa Vieja Lodge during April and May. Feel free to contact me if you have any interest, fishing is still really good. Stay tuned for more reports and great pictures coming soon.

Sailfish School Report, Casa Vieja Lodge
March 13, 2014
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge:
Today started my second Sailfish School of this month, aboard the vessel "Makaira" with Captain Jason Brice, mates Jeffrey and Wilson, along with fly anglers/ students, John Killian from South Carolina, and his friend Jim Whitehurst from Florida and North Carolina. John and Jim are both accomplished fly anglers and avid sportsmen, however, catching billfish on fly was new to both.
Fishing started off well when I was demonstrating the TFO BW-HD fly rod, the Mako #9700 fly reel, the RIO fly line, along with the pink and white Cam Sigler fly, a big sailfish showed up on the left teaser. Jeffrey teased it in, Jason pulled the Makaira out of gear and gave the command "CAST", I then made a 25 foot perfect (grin) cast, and we released that sailfish 4 minutes later.
Next up Jim cast, hooked , fought, and released a nice sailfish on fly, and just a short time later John Killian caught and released his first ever Sailfish on fly.
As the day went on fishing slowed, we raised around 20 sailfish today, our team had 12 bites, and we released 7 sailfish on fly today, a great way to start the trip. This is not an easy game to play with a 100 pound animal on one end of a string, and a 200 pound man on the other end, the string will break if you pull 20 pounds of pressure on it. My guys made a few mistakes which we all make in the beginning, however that said we had a great day of fly fishing. We can't wait to get back out there tomorrow, fore more adventures in Sailfish World. I Love my job, wish you were here, more reports tomorrow.

Sailfish School Report, Casa Vieja Lodge
March 12, 2014
Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today was the last of three days of fly fishing for sailfish in this Sailfish School, Chris and Isabel Weatherley along with Eric Hirschhorn from Dallas Texas. We had a cold front come through with some wind and rain during the night, then on our way out we caught up to that front. Fishing today was slower than the last few days, however Each angler had several bites and we wound up releasing 2 sailfish from six bites today.
Isabel who is actually 13 years of age, caught and released four sailfish with several weighting close to 120 pounds, all on 20 pound IGFA class tippet during this her first time ever seeing a sailfish let alone catching them on fly. Chris and Eric both caught several each day and fro the three day Sailfish School our team caught and released 14 Sailfish on fly in 3 days. I was very impressed with how well this group of fly anglers did here in the middle of the Sailfish world. All ended with big smiles, these fly anglers will return to Casa Vieja Lodge real soon.
This is why I love my job, wish you were here. Tomorrow I start another Sailfish School with two new clients, Jim Whitehurst from Florida, and John Killian from South Carolina. Stay tuned for more reports.

Today, March 10 2013, my Sailfish School students Chris Weatherley, his daughter Isabel Weatherley, and Eric Hirschhorn from Dallas Texas, met up with me for a world class breakfast at the Casa Vieja Lodge breakfast dining room at 6:00 AM. After breakfast, we headed over to the Sailfish Marina where we boarded "Makaira" with captain Jason Brice, and his two mates Jeffery and Wilson.
Today Brian Horsley first group of fly anglers split in to two teams, and started their first day aboard " Rum Line" with captain Chris Sheeder, and "Intensity" with captain Mike Sheeder. The first part of my report has the Intensity team with 18 bites and 10 sailfish caught and released on fly, while team Rum Line got 20 some bites, and they caught and released 16 sailfish on fly today. Release and Spindrift were fishing conventional tackle and caught close to 30 on each boat.
Meanwhile, Isabel, (14 years of age) caught 3 Sailfish on fly today, all in all Chris, Isabel, Eric and I raised over 40, got 40 bites, and we caught 12 sailfish on fly. Isabel dig great, while her dad and his partner Eric, on there second day of The Sailfish School, looked line professionals.
I love my job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more red hot fly fishing reports from The Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala!

Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today, March 10 2013, my Sailfish School students Chris Weatherley, his daughter Isabel Weatherley, and Eric Hirschhorn from Dallas Texas, met me for a world class breakfast at the Casa Vieja Lodge breakfast dining room at 6:00 AM. After breakfast, we headed over to the Sailfish Marina where we boarded "Makaira" with captain Jason Brice, and his two mates Jeffery and Wilson.
By 7:00 AM we headed out the inlet in this classic 37 foot Rybovich, and ran offshore about 30 miles before we put the teasers into the water. As I was explaining what to expect to my students, 3 minutes after we deployed the teasers, a big Sailfish popped up on the left flat, Jeffery teased it in, I made a cast, and five minutes later the lesson was over. Then we tried something new with a GoPro camera, it worked out well.
Fifteen minutes later Isabel (14) hooked, fought, (for 45 minutes) and released what may have been the biggest sailfish of the day, close to 120 pounds, we got some great video but did not get the picture of her fish which I was looking for. Next Erik caught his first of three big sailfish on fly, his first ever, we were all really excited for Eric.
Then before 11 AM, Chris hooked a monster and fought it perfectly for his first sailfish ever on fly. After releasing a big sailfish for each of the anglers aboard "Makaira", we went on to hook a total of 18 sailfish on fly, after raising 32, and our team of beginner sailfish on fly anglers wound up releasing 10 sailfish for the first day of This Sailfish School.
Captain Mike Sheeder was fly fishing in the same area, he raised 32, got 18 bites, and released 13 sailfish on fly aboard "Intensity". Today Brian Horsley arrived at Casa Vieja Lodge with the first half of his crew, starting tomorrow they will be fishing aboard "Rum Line" with captain Chris Sheeder, and "Intensity" with captain Mike Sheeder. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports from the world class Casa Vieja Lodge. I love my job, wish you were here, fishing is hot!

March 9, 2014
Greetings from Sailfish World:
Today I flew down to Guatemala from North Carolina after several weeks of winter weather, I arrived here and was greeted with 85 degree sunshine and calm seas. That is not all, seems that after a week and a half of seeing 10 to 20 sailfish per day, it turned on here again. During the last several days the Casa Vieja Fleet has been raising over 40 sailfish per day average, and several boats released over 50 sailfish. I will not go into all of the numbers for each boat, however I just spoke to an angler who fished aboard Spindrift today, he reported releasing 52 sailfish and a Blue Marlin today.
My Clients (students) for The Sailfish School beginning tomorrow are Chris Weatherley, his daughter Isabel Weatherley, and Eric Hirschhorn all from Dallas TX, none have experienced Billfish on fly. I plan to video these next couple of schools on my new Go Pro cameras.
Tomorrow my friend Brian Horsley will be arriving with his first group of March, looks like we are all in for some awesome fly fishing for Billfish here at the world Class Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala. I love my job, wish you were, stay tuned for lots of pictures and fishing reports.

February 18, 2014
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
Today, Winston Meade fished his third day of "The Sailfish School" with me as his instructor, captain Mike Sheeder running the "Intensity" along with Flaco and Ricardo doing the teasing. We headed south east for an hour before we put out the teasers, after raising 3 sailfish getting 2 bites and catching 2 fish before noon, Mike ran for 30 minutes and began trolling again. At 3:59 PM we raised our 13th sailfish of the day, a long fish which came in hot, Winston made a good cast and that fish piled on the fly. Ten minutes later we headed in after having a total of 13 sailfish raised, seven bites, and Winston released his 7th fish from 7 bites, another great day at the office.
Mean while Bill, Fern, and Phil caught six on fly aboard Makaira, the Spindrift had two fly anglers aboard and captain Nicho caught them 5 on fly and missed a Blue Marlin bite on fly. Captain Chris aboard Rum Line caught and released 10 Sailfish on Fly with 2 anglers from 17 bites. Stay tuned for more reports from Sailfish World, I love my Job wish you were here

Sailfish School Report, Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala
February, 16, 2014
Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
February 12, I left North Carolina to escape the Ice and snow to get to the Miami Boat Show, where I worked in the Casa Vieja Lodge with owners David and kristen Salazar along with Melanie and Elisa promoting Casa Vieja Lodge. Thursday and Friday were fairly busy at the show, I got to see many old friends and fishing captains and I sold several trips to paradise. On Saturday morning I flew to Guatemala where I am hosting several clients at a Sailfish School.
Sunday February 16, 2014, My Sailfish School Client is Winston Meade from New York City, he is a very good fly angler with no experience catching Billfish on fly before today. His father, Okla Basil "Dickie" Meade, found me on the internet and decided to join his son for a fun trip.
Winston and I had a good breakfast and then joined captain Mile Sheeder along with mates Flaco and Ricardo for our first of four days of fly fishing for sailfish. Winston caught and released his first Sailfish on fly at 8:01 AM it was a 70 pound beauty. Now when we arrived I was told that for the last 15 days that the fishing has been red hot, with boats raising 40 to 60 fish per day, of course when I get here it usually would slow down, WRONG! Today we raised about 40 some sailfish, we cast the fly at 23 and caught 18 sailfish on fly, I caught 5 for five (second half of doubles) while Winston on his first day caught and released 13 sailfish on fly.
Bob Blair, Fern Elfson and Phil Datillo are my clients who are fishing aboard Makaira with captain Jason Brice, they caught 7 sailfish on fly and had a 100 pound sailfish jump into the boat for added excitement. Captain Chris Sheeder caught 14 on fly with his clients while the other CVL boats caught 30 or more today while bait fishing. Stay tuned for more reports to follow daily from Casa Vieja Lodge in Sailfish world, I love my Job, wish you were here!

Jake

Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
Today Valinda and Jerry Coates and I went fly fishing for sailfish aboard "Intensity". This morning the seas were choppy (3 to 5 foot seas), until 11:00 AM, around 9:30 we Jerry caught a 12 pound Wahoo on fly, then 20 minutes later I caught a 30 pound Dorado on fly, then Valinda caught a Sailfish on fly, after which Jerry caught a 20 pound Yellow Fin Tuna, thus completing a boat super grand slam.
After it calmed down we found the sailfish, Both Valinda and Jerry caught a couple sailfish on fly. After three days of fly fishing aboard Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco and Ricardo, we caught and released 19 sailfish on fly, Jerry and Valinda have already reserved a return to the world class Casa Vieja Lodge with me in 2015. I love my job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more fly fishing reports. If you are coming to the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset NJ this coming weekend, give me a call as I will be there presenting programs.

Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
Today Valinda Coates remained at Casa Vieja Lodge, enjoying the pool while Jerry Coates and I went fly fishing for sailfish aboard "Intensity". This morning the seas were rough (4 to 6 foot seas), so we ran slow into the wind for an hour or so before heading off shore. As we went further out it got rougher, and then at 10:30 we raised a sailfish, it teased in and Jerry caught and released it. After the release that sailfish swam around and headed away from the boat, we put out the teasers and it teased in again and ate another fly which Jerry cast, then 10 minutes later he released the same fish again.
At 11:00 it calmed down when the wind died, we ran 2 miles and began fishing at 12 noon. During the next two hours we saw at least 40 sailfish, got bites from 18 and released 9 sailfish on fly. At 2:00 it died and we never saw another fish for the rest of the day, what an awesome day. Today I made every mistake that every beginner makes, hooked my shirt in the middle of my back as 3 sailfish swam around looking for my fly, I made a perfect cast on another fish which ate the fly, came tight, and broke off due to me having the fly line wrapped around the reel handle. I also hooked a sailfish in the bill, held on while it was jumping and broke the point from the hook off in that bill. Again, Wow, what a fun day for Jerry and I, I like to make all of my mistakes in one day and get it out of my system for another year. I love my job, wish you were here at the worlds greatest fly fishing lodge with me.

Greetings from Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala:
After a very good day of fly fishing aboard Intensity with Captain Mike Sheeder along with mates Flaco and Ricardo, Jerry and Valinda Coates and I just finished a world class dinner here at the Casa Vieja Lodge. Today it was rough in the morning and calmed down around 11 AM, we took our time getting to the fish but after 11 AM it was game on. Valinda caught her first Sailfish on fly on her second cast, shortly later Jerry caught another hot one.
A little later I caught a red hot sailfish as it laid down and got calm and sunny. Then Valinda took a nap, while Jerry and I fished, at 2:45 we raised a pod of 5 hot sailfish, I caught one while Jerry caught 2 which was my first triple of 2014. We wound up catching 6 from 13 bites and had a great time. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports to follow shortly, I love my job, wish you were here.
