Keys Tarpon & Worm Report
May 19, 20, 21, 2015
Greetings from Palolo Worm World:
On the late night shift during the last 3 nights, my fly anglers never saw a Tarpon, no bites, no fish rolling, no fish anywhere! It seems that the Keys Tarpon expect these "Palolo Worms" to come out from the sponges at this time of the year, when a very high tide flows to a very low tide, ending sometime around dark. If the water temperature is between 84 and 88 degrees, near a full or new moon, and the stars line up, a bunch of red worms with chartreuse colored heads, come out of the sponges on the bottom of keys waters, between 4 PM and dark.
This "worm hatch" causes the tarpon to act really weird for few days before the worms go off, then they (Tarpon) disappear, the night before the worms, and show up by the thousands to feast on millions of worms that evening. A few lucky angles who join the hundred or more boats, acting as crazy as the tarpon, will see the crazy tarpon swimming on the surface scooping in tons of worms. A few may even get really lucky get a bite and jump some fish, and even fewer may get really lucky and catch a Tarpon on a worm fly!
This crazy few days makes the real tarpon anglers really frustrated as the normal fly fishing for Tarpon on the flats really sucks during this period. Thank the fish gods, it is almost over, the fish should get back to normal after this busy Memorial Day weekend. Many drunken boaters will be gone, the Tarpon will get back to normal, and the fly anglers will began casting flies to tarpon who will eat the fly and bring much pleasure to all of those who worship the Tarpon Gods, glad it is over!
I love my job, wish you were here to enjoy this awesome fishery. More reports to follow!

May 16: Al Jumped three and caught two nice Tarpon on fly, then on May 17, Michael caught a 75 pound Tarpon, our only bite of this trip. May 18: We jumped four big Silver King, with Michael landing a 90 pound beautiful fish on 20 pound class tippet.

Greetings from Tarpon Season:
My good friends Billy Coulliette, from Cooper Landing Alaska, and Dave Caldwell, from Anchorage fly fished with me aboard "Fly Reel" for Silver King, between 11:30 PM and 3:30 AM, last evening. Wind was east at 20 knots, clear skies, 84.5 degree water temperature, with lots of sea weed floating in Cormorant Slew. Fly fishing was steady, my anglers had six tarpon that jumped and fought hard, in the end we caught and released two Silver King on 20 pound tippet on the Fly, one about 90# and the other over 100#! My Alaskan buddies had a great trip, all caught multiple Tarpon on fly, and we had FUN! I am really tired, getting ready to sleep after a great Cuban roast pork, lunch at Coco's on Big Pine Key, I love my job, wish you were here, more reports to follow!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
My good friends Billy Coulliette, and Josh Hayes, from Alaska, joined me aboard "Fly Reel" between 10:30 PM and 2:30 AM this morning, for some epic fly fishing for Tarpon! Now, both Billy and Josh are world class fly anglers, so I switched out their leaders and fished with 16 pound class tippet instead of 20 pond, just to make it more interesting.
Billy caught a 110 pound female tarpon, which took him less than 14 minutes from hook-up to the time I grabbed the leader and released that awesome fish. Then, Josh hooked a really big fish, maybe over 140-150 pounds, it was really epic, as usually these really big fish don't clear the water when they jump. Wrong, this monster made several full 15 foot, clear the water jumps, then ran off several hundred yards of backing, before we got some line back. She swam in a giant circle, pulling "Fly Reel" around in a circle, before running around some unknown object and breaking the 16 pound tippet after a 12 minute battle. Total score for the night was 7 big Silver King Jumped with one fish landed. We had a great time, I love fishing with these great friends. I love my job, wish you were here!

My Alaskan fly anglers jumped 5 and caught 2 Tarpon on fly on 2-# class tippet. I love my job, wish you were here!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
Tonight my friends from Alaska Josh Hayes and Dave Caldwell, fished with me aboard "Fly Reel" between 8:00 PM and 12:30 AM. East wind just under 15 knots with 84.5 water temperature made for good Tarpon fly fishing. We jumped 13 big Tarpon and released 3, two of the fish were between 110 and 115 pounds while Dave Caldwell hooked, jumped, fought, leadered, and released a really big female of between 140 and 150 pounds, all on 20 pound test class tippet. Dave also had a 110 pound fish charge the boat, tried to jump into the boat, hit Dave in the head, slid down the gunwale on the starboard side, slimed Josh, then spit the hook and swam away. What an awesome night with two great friends, laughing all night! I love my Job!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
My friends, Danny and Art, from Anchorage Alaska, Joined me tonight aboard "Fly Reel", between 8:00 PM and midnight, for some fly fishing for Tarpon. We had 15 knot east wind, with water temperature of 84 degrees, which produced lots of tarpon bites. Both anglers jumped at least five tarpon, we had some bad luck with broken tippet, due to wind knot, and some awesome jumps. The final score when we left Tarpon World was two Silver king both over 110 pounds, released from eleven big fish jumped. These conditions are awesome, should get better every night this week! I love my Job, wish were here, more reports to follow tomorrow!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
Southeast wind at 12 knots, 83 degree water temperature, lots of Tarpon around, last night Rex and Basil boarded "Fly Reel" at 7:30 PM at my marina. We headed out to Pelican channel where we saw lots of rolling tarpon, Rex jumped his first of the trip during our first drift. We fished till 11:PM when the current quit, My anglers had hooked and jumped seven big tarpon, however we only got the leader for a release on one. Total score one caught from 7 jumped, on 20# class tippet, on the fly!
At 11:15. in the marina parking lot, I tripped on a parking space concrete stop, and took a header, landing nose first on the black top. Bloody nose, cut on right hand, however no broken bones as far as I know. Just Lucky I guess! I love my job, Tonight I start five days with my friends from Alaska, Josh and Billy, along with several other Alaskan friends! More reports to follow

Florida Keys Tarpon fly fishing Report
May 7, & 9, 2015
Greetings from Tarpon World:
These last couple of nights had very good weather, with no wind and flat calm seas, the sunny days have brought the water temperature up from 76.5 to 82.4 degrees in "The Bay of Tarpon"! Lots of fish moved into the bay, and a few cool things happened.
On May 7, 2015, Chet and Basil, retired US Air force, joined me for a late night fly fishing tarpon adventure. We left the dock at 3:30 AM, and Chet Jumped the first Tarpon on fly about 4:00 AM, after a couple of jumps the hook came out. There were many tarpon around, they were eating worms on the surface, and seemed to ignore my fly. Then at 5:10 AM Basil hooked, Jumped, fought, and eventually released, a nice female (over 100 pounds) Silver King, on 20 pound class tippet. This was Basil's first Tarpon on fly, big smiles all around. One Tarpon aught from two Jumped!
May 9, 2015: Tonight we hit the water at 7:30 PM, the last two afternoons, had my Tarpon eating Palolo worms, between 5:30 PM and dark, over on the Worm Bar, and up in Tarpon World Channel. We saw lots of Tarpon milling around before dark but they were concentrating on the last of the worms, and would not eat my fly. As it got real dark, around 8:40 PM, Basil hooked a red hot 100 pound plus Tarpon. That fish jumped plenty, and towed my boat around for 15 minutes, until I grabbed the leader and released our only bite of the trip. Now that the worm hatch is over, these fish should get back to normal, so I expect fishing to improve every night this week! congratulations to Basil, he has now hooked, jumped, caught, and released, the only two tarpon which he got bites from!
I love my job, wish you were here. Only 23 more consecutive nights of Fly Fishing for Tarpon for old Captain Jake. Then I fly to Los Suenos, Costa Rica, where I will live from June 7, through August 8, 2015. I will be operating my Costa Rica, Blue Marlin Fly Fishing Schools aboard the vessel "Dragin Fly" for the second full season. Last year all of my students caught at least one Blue Marlin on fly on 20 pound class tippet, we had as many as 5 caught by one of my students, (Anglers) along with two grand slams! I plan to make 8 or nine trips out to the FAD where I operate my fly fishing schools, I do have only one school left available during my 2015 season, I am also taking reservations for my 2016 Costa Rica Blue Marlin Fly Fishing Schools. If you want to do this call me NOW, this fishery will not last forever!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
Last four nights I fly fished for Tarpon with Bob and Dick Pill and their friend Jim, all from western NJ, all had never caught a tarpon on fly. Fishing seemed slow due to weird wind and lightning patterns, during the four, four hour trips, we jumped 25 tarpon and caught a total of six Tarpon on fly, all on 20 pound test, class tippet. Each angler was happy and they will be back next year at the same time. I love my Job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more Tarpon fly fishing reports to follow!

Greetings from Tarpon World:
After a few days of rain, strong west turning to north wind, water temperature drop from 90.5 degrees to 79 degrees, and crappy tarpon fly fishing, the sun came out, and the wind switched to the east at 20 knots. I explained to my young friends, Tommy Gilmore and Ed Jaworowski, that this will cause my tarpon to return to "Tarpon World", and save my reputation.
Both Ed and Tom seemed skeptical when we boarded "Fly Reel" at 12:30 AM, and were greeted by a stiff 20 knot wind out of the east. I headed to a secret spot near "white possum bank" just to the north of "cormorant creek" and suggested a cast where I had seen some nervous water. The rest is history, four hours later, Ed and Tommy had jumped nine giant Tarpon, they had caught and released five of these awesome "Silver King" all between 90 and 125 pounds.
We sat there in the near full moon, dazed with big smiles on our face, giggling like little kids, and telling stories of the awesome jumps and great fights. All is good in the land of the giants, I still love my job, now halfway through Tarpon Season. During my first 27 four hour, night time, tarpon, fly fishing adventures, in Tarpon World, My anglers jumped 115 Tarpon of which they caught and released 55 Tarpon on 20 pound tippet, on Fly! Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports from "Tarpon World!

Florida Keys Tarpon fly fishing Report
April 29, 30, & May 1, 2015
Greetings from the Florida Keys:
April 29, 2015, West wind, north wind, lightning and thunder, and 20 hours of steady, heavy rain, canceled trip tonight due to Lightning and side ways rain.
April 30, 2015: Today my friends Ed Jaworowski and Tom Gilmore, from PA, arrived for 3 nights of fly fishing for tarpon. There were plenty of tarpon in the area but they were acting weird with this North wind. Mid way through our trip, the tarpon started eating worms all around the boat, sounded like rifle shots, however the north wind made it very difficult to set the hook. We had at least 5 bites but only two fish hooked and jumped, Ed had a big fish on for several jumps however the hook came out due to the wrong drag setting on my reel. Fun but very tough night, jumped 2.
May 1, 2015: Tonight the wind blew 15 from the north and increased to 25 several hours into the night, the water temperature has dropped from 90 to under 80 degrees in the last 4 days, tarpon did not eat tonight. Tommy hooked and jumped a pretty big fish, but the hook came out after a 200 yard run. After jumping just one Tarpon tonight, I declared that the fishing sucked and we quit early.
May 2, 2015: Pressure is on, Ed and Tom are here for one more night, sun came out, wind swung to the east, and the tarpon are moving again on the flats. Tonight both Ed Jaworowski and Tommy Gilmore will catch and release some big Tarpon, on fly, on 20 pound tippet, and my reputation will be saved! I report it the way it is, no sugar coating, fishing here has sucked for the last few days! I love my job, and wish you were here. Stay tuned for Ed and Tom's report from tonight.

Greetings from Marathon, in the Florida Keys where it has been raining hard since 2:00 AM this morning with lightning and thunder with strong wind. Last night on April, 27, 2015, my fly anglers Bob Cogan and Tom Coleman from the Charlotte NC area boarded "Fly Reel" at 9:30 PM for a night of fly fishing for big Tarpon. The wind was blowing from the south at 5 to 10 knots and the water temperature had dropped to 86.5 degrees. There were lots of Tarpon around, they were eating shrimp and worms on the surface, we had more than a dozen bites in 4 hours, they were hard to hook, however both of my anglers jumped a couple. When it
started to rain with lightning closing in at 1:30 AM, we headed back to the dock, the total score was 5 Tarpon Jumped, with one landed and one lost very close to the boat. These guys already re-booked for more nights next year. I love my Job, wish you were here. More reports to follow!
Florida Keys Tarpon fly fishing Report
April 26 & 27, 2015
April, 26, 2015: Tonight is the last of 3 nights of fly fishing for Tarpon with my old friend of 30 years, Bill Anderson, his son David Anderson who started fishing with me at 12 years of age, and their friend Cal Accord, (retired movie special effects guy), from California. Fishing began to improve and each one of these guys hooked, jumped, fought, one big 100 pound plus tarpon. David caught a 110 pound fish, Cal caught a 100 pounder, while Bill got within 3 foot of landing a big 125 pound giant Tarpon, all on fly, all on 20 pound class tippet. It was awesome fishing with my old friends.
April:27, 2017: Bob Cogan and Tom Coleman from Charlotte NC area, joined me tonight for their first of two nights to fly fish for Tarpon. Both of these gentleman had never caught a Tarpon on fly, so I worked an hour or two teaching my technique to both of these fly anglers. Our first bite came at 10:40 PM, and then the fishing turned on pretty quickly. At 12:30 PM when we quit for the night Both Bob and Tom caught there first 100 pound plus Tarpon on fly, our score was 8 jumped with two caught and released. More for these guys this evening, I love my job, wish you were here! Stay tuned fro more reports to follow!
Florida Keys Tarpon fly fishing Report
April 24 & 25, 2015
My old friend of 30 years, Bill Anderson, his son David Anderson who started fishing with me at 12 years of age, and their friend Cal Accord, (retired movie special effects guy), from California, are here for 3 nights of fly fishing for Tarpon. On April 23 the wind went west, blew hard for a few hours, and blew tons of sea weed out into the tarpon waters, making it really hard to fly fish. The water temperature is prematurely high, 87.8 degrees, which is normal for late may or early June, and the Tarpon hate west wind.
We fished the last two nights, during which time we only got 4 (very poor) bites, Both Bill and David hooked, jumped, and fought a 100 pound plus tarpon last evening, both fish got off within 5 foot of landing them. Looks like the wind has finally swung to the south and should go to the ease by sometime tonight, if that happens all three of my fly anglers should land a Tarpon on fly this evening. I love my job, even while it is slow, wish you were here, More reports to follow.
Tarpon World Fly Fishing Report:
April 20, 21, 2015
Greetings from Paradise:
April 20 2015: Tonight I fished with Julie Maguire from Saint Augustine FL along with her fiend who is a Striper fly angler from New England. Neither angler had ever fly fished for Tarpon and Julie is relatively new to fly fishing, both took instructions well and did an excellent job in fly fishing for big Tarpon. We left the dock aboard "Fly Reel" at 2:20 AM, and began fly fishing at 2:35. By 3:00 AM both of my fly anglers had hooked and jumped their first Tarpon ever. As daylight began to creep in to the east, my two fly anglers had caught three Tarpon over 100 pounds from 9 fish jumped. We had a great time, even jumped two fish after it got light, these fly fishers will be back for more next season. "Thanks Julie"!
April, 21, 2015: Fished my neighbor, John, repaying a favor, for 2 hours just before dawn this morning. We jumped two tarpon each, I released two and Johnny caught a big 120 pounder just as it got light. Off for one night then starting over for the next 21 days in a row. I love my job, wish you were here. Had breakfast with old friend, captain Randy Rode, this morning. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports to follow!

April 15 & 16, 2015
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 15, 2015: Tonight and tomorrow night my anglers are Jeff Pickering from NC and Gary Randall from the west coast of Florida, we fly fished for Tarpon aboard "Fly Reel" from 11:30 PM tonight until 3:30 AM. The wind swung to the south which made the drift slower, along with making it more difficult to set the hook. Both Jeff and Gary Jumped and caught their first Tarpon on fly, As a team, we jumped 8 big Poons, and landed 2 in the hundred pound class, and one over 125 pounds. Three caught Tarpon from 8 Jumped fish is pretty good for beginners!
April 16, 2015: Jeff and Gary met me at the marina at 12:30 AM , we boarded "Fly Reel" and headed directly to Tarpon world. 83 degree water temperature, south east wind at 10, first bite was five minutes after we got to the fishing grounds, and our first Silver King was released by 1:00 PM. My guys jumped 9 Tarpon tonight and they caught three, several more were broken off within 2 foot of catching them. Another awesome night at the office, I love my job, wish you were here. Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports from the fabulous Florida Keys.

April 14, 2015: Tonight Rex Mauer and Dean Lebow joined me for a night of fly fishing for Tarpon, now Rex has fished with me in the past while Dean has never even seen a Tarpon before. My two fly anglers from Washington state, boarded "Fly Reel" with me at 9:30 PM and we headed out to one of my favorite tarpon feeding spots. It didn't take long, Dean jumped a big Tarpon which spit the fly back at us, then Rex hooked, jumped, and caught a 110 pound female. After two hours Rex was 3 for 4, while Dean had caught one big tarpon from 3 jumped.
After four hours of red hot fly fishing for Tarpon, my two anglers had caught and released six big Tarpon from 10 hooked and jumped. Fishing was good, we caught and released one tarpon on 20 pound test class tippet, every 45 minutes of fishing, the biggest Tarpon was about 125 pounds tonight. I really love my job, wish you were here. I still have Saturday night and Sunday night, April 18 and 19 available from a cancellation, Call me now if you can get here as the Tarpon fly fishing is getting really hot right now! (305-872-6060)

Greetings from the Fabulous Florida Keys:
April 13, 2015: Eddie Matuzak from Pennsylvania, joined me aboard "Fly Reel" for his third night in a row of fly fishing for big tarpon. We left the marina at 8:20 PM and headed north to a spot at the top end of cormorant slew, where I had seen some big tarpon rolling earlier in the day. After an hour and 10 minutes, Eddie hooked a 110 pound power house, which proceeded to put on a show with a dozen or more acrobatic jumps before allowing me to remove the fly from her mouth for our first release of the evening.
We moved over to Jurassic Park, where it was a little more choppy with a 15 knot wind against the current, but the big fish had moved in earlier today. Ed jumped a total of five tarpon tonight, all were females between 110 and 135 pounds, incredible jumps from all, He caught and released 3 from five jumped, and at the end of the night he took that fly and leader which had caught all three Tarpon, home with him to mount with a picture of his biggest Tarpon
During the last three nights of fly fishing for tarpon (12 hours fishing time) Eddie Matuzak jumped a total of fourteen and caught ten Tarpon on fly! Ed is a really good fly angler, he caught on quickly to my system for defeating big Tarpon quickly on 20 pound class tippet. I really love my job, wish you were here! Stay tuned for more fly fishing reports. Lets go fly fishing?

April 11, & 12, 2015
Greetings from The Florida Keys:
April 11, 2015, Ed Matuzak from Pennsylvania is here in Tarpon World to fly fish with me during the next three nights. We left the marina aboard "Fly Reel" at 7:30 PM, and headed out "Silver King Channel" up to the north end of "Pelican Bank". I saw a couple of Tarpon rolling on the surface, turned off and tilted the motor, and had Ed make a short cast to the area on the edge of the drop off. Ten minutes later I grabbed the leader, removed the hook from that 70 pound male Tarpon, and released our first bite of the night. Ed's second hookup was a 110 pound female, it fought valiantly and jumped 11 times, Eddie had her to the boat in 20 minutes, and I removed the hook and we were now 2 for two. During the rest of the 4 hour trip Eddie jumped two more big fish, one pulled the hook after 10 minutes, and the last fish (120 Pound female) was caught just before we headed to the dock at 11:30 PM. Great night with a good fly angler.
April 12, 2015: Tonight we fished from 8:00 PM to 12 midnight, Ed was deadly tonight, we got a total of five solid bites, Eddie caught and released four of them on the same fly on twenty pound tippet, and pulled the hook out on a jump from the last monster fish. 4 of the five tarpon were over 100 pounds, the small one was about 90 pounds. Every night id different, the two nights before my anglers jumped 9 tarpon and caught one, then this two nights, we Jumped 9 and caught seven! Florida Keys,Tarpon Fly Fishing Report
April 9, & 10, 2015
Greetings from The Florida Keys:
April 9, 2015, I fished a short tide tonight with Rip Woodin and Ed Vaden from North Carolina. We headed out to Tarpon world at 7:00 AM and fished until the end of the tide at about 11:00 PM, we didn't see or get any bites until after dark, our first Tarpon bite was at 8:15, it jumped and spit the hook. The wind was blowing at close to 20 knots from the southeast, and the water temperature was 80 degrees. Both Ed and Rip jumped two big tarpon, however we had a tough time staying connected. Zero for 4 tonight!
April 10, 2015: Tonight we arrived at the marina to head out into Tarpon world at about 7:30 PM, fishing started out pretty good. Both Ed and Rip hooked, jumped, and fought two tarpon each during the first hour of this trip, After loosing all of those four Tarpon for one reason or another, I was getting nervous about a luck thing. Fishing slowed and an hour later Rip caught a red hot lady fish, and then I headed out into Jurassic park. The next fish hooked was hooked by Ed out in a deep slew, it was a big Tarpon, which only jumped twice and then headed for Cuba. We chased that 130 pound plus Tarpon for several miles, it was under our boat, 10 feet from the fly rod tip, the leader came to the rod tip for a release, then that big female Tarpon surged while Ed was winding, and the 20 pound class tippet broke. Wow, what an awesome Tarpon, which is why I love my job. Stay tuned for more reports to follow shortly. One for 9 for two nights of fly fishing for Tarpon.
Fly Fishing Report, from "Tarpon World
April 6, 2015
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 6, 2015: Chris Willen and Todd Gregory fished their second evening of fly fishing for Tarpon with me aboard "Fly Reel" last night. Water temperature of 79.5 was perfect with southeast wind at 10 to 15 knots, made for good fishing. During the first two hours it was slow, then it got cloudy and a rain squall showed up, it rained hard fro 10 minutes then began to drizzle, which turned them on. Over the next two hours Todd and Chris Jumped eight and caught two nice Tarpon on Fly.
We had a ball, giggling like a couple of kids, we had some incredible, high jumps, and got two Silver King in the 85 to 100 pound class to the boat for releases. I love my job, wish you were here. I still have April 18, and 19, available which are prime time tides, call me NOW if you want to catch a bunch of Tarpon on fly this season, when these dates are gone I am sold out for the whole season. More reports to follow!

Fly Fishing Report, from "Tarpon World
April 4 & 5, 2015
Greetings from Tarpon World:
April 4, 2015: I picked up with Vic DeFeo, from Cincinnati, Ohio, at his hotel just after midnight, we stopped for coffee, and drove to the marina. After getting "Fly Reel" ready to go, we left the dock and headed out to "Pelican Slew". At 1:05 AM, Vic hooked an 80 pound male Tarpon, then 12 minutes later I grabbed the leader and released that awesome Silver King (Vic's first ever on fly). During the next three hours Vic, had three more Tarpon eat his fly, one big fish, broke off on the jump, the second one was a 40 pound juvenile which we caught quickly after 13 jumps, and the final fish of the night was a female, close to 120 pounds, we chased that fish for over 3 miles out to sea before I released it and called it a night. Those Tarpon still remember how to eat my "Poon Bugs", must be Tarpon Season again!
April 5, 2015: Todd Gregory and Chris Willen, met me at the marina, tonight for our first time fly fishing for tarpon together. Chris is a guide from Wisconsin, while Todd builds fishing boats in Tennessee. The weather was pretty with a easterly wind at 10 to 15 knots with a water temperature of 79 degrees, fishing was slow. After an hour of hunting for Poons, I looked along "Silver King bank", finally I found a pod of hungry tarpon, Chris got the first bite, unfortunately after a world class trout strike that first fish came off. Fifty yards away, Todd hooked a 100 pound fish which jumped a couple of times, ran a quarter mile, and then spit the hook.
Todd hooked another nice fish down closer to a bridge, this fish was big, it ran and jumped for 15 minutes before we managed to get close to the leader. Than smart tarpon swam right up under the boat as we went through the bridge (just like walking a dog on a leash). Todd had the leader inside of the tip of the rod when that hot fish charged back up current heading toward the bridge pilings, Todd clamped down, the fish jumped right next to the boat and the 20 pound tippet broke. Chris caught the fourth fish that we hooked, (Female over 100 pounds), another long hard battle, we had a great time and will be back out there tonight. Chris and Todd are really fun to fish with, I really love my job, more fly fishing reports to follow!

Got to the Keys on Wednesday, April first, moved into my rental home, unpacked, and had a good night sleep. Woke up at 7:00 AM on Thursday, fixed the hitch on my trailer, washed and polished the boat, loaded electronics, fishing gear, lights, and fishing gear. Launched the "Fly Reel" moved her to my slip, tied her up and got her ready to fish. I went grocery shopping, rigged my fly rods and flies, All ready to fish.
Wednesday, April third, my friends Rick Pope and Chris Thompson, arrived in early afternoon, we had an awesome seafood dinner at "Keys Fishery" (Stone Crabs, Shrimp, Conch, along with "Lobster Rubin"), then a nap followed by four hours of fly fishing for Tarpon.
The weather was pretty with a full moon, a small shrimp hatch went off halfway through the tide, the water temperature was 76.5, and the Tarpon where exactly where I left them 10 months ago. Rick hooked, jumped, and fought two nice Poons, one chewed through the 100 pound bite tippet, while his other fish gave us a bunch of acrobatic jumps before letting go of my Tarpon fly.
Chris got started a little later, he jumped and fought a smaller fish which came off after a couple of great jumps, and then Chris hooked a nice 85-90 pound red hot male, this fish went north, 5 major jumps, then came south with some 10 to 15 foot high jumps, then after a 100 yard race, that fish jumped straight at the boat and pulled the hook. Wow, we had lots of fun, and were off of the water 4 hours after we started, Rick and Chris, left my house, headed for Fort Lauderdale airport, at 5:00 AM. It was awesome sharing my Tarpon with these close friends, I love my job, wish you were here. More fly fishing reports from Tarpon world
to follow shortly.
Regards:
Jake
